HOLLEY - One area dentist is redefining the phrase "put your money where your mouth is." This year, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Dr. Steven Thompson in Holley, and receive $1 per pound. Dr. Thompson is leading this decay fighting movement by giving away dollars and flashing toothbrushes in exchanges for cavity-causing candy. All candy collected (along with plenty of new toothbrushes) will then be sent to our troops overseas. "I'm not out to be the Grinch who stole Halloween or anything," Thompson said. "Halloween should be about having fun and we want kids to enjoy themselves. But realistically, most kids collect way more candy than they can or should even think about consuming. With our Halloween Candy Buy Back event, they can have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, still enjoy plenty of candy, and also provide a well-appreciated treat for our troops. We've heard from returning troops that candy from home is considered a very special treat." "Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing twice a day are great preventative measures, but doing away with pounds of excess sugar would really make a difference, too," says Flossie MacDonald from Dr. Thompson's office. "Most kids will eat their favorite candy right away, so why keep all the extra candy around?" The candy buy back will occur at Dr. Thompson's office the day after Halloween only from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Door prizes and a prize for the best costume will also be awarded. Local businesses that would like to participate by providing prizes, extra treats, or money to help with shipping costs should contact Diana at Dr. Thompson's office as soon as possible.
