Blood Drives

•American Red Cross Blood Drives open to the public: July 26 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Sweden Clarkson Community Center, 4927 Lake Road, Brockport; July 30 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Hilton Fire Department, 137 South Avenue, Hilton. Blood donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old (16 with a NYS parental permission slip) and must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Entertainment/Events

•Third annual Flea Market Extravaganza at Gaines Carlton Community Church, 14585 Ridge Road, Albion, half a mile east of Route 98, Saturday, August 7. Over 45 vendors - artisans, crafters, collectibles, jewelry, furnitire, antiques, home and garden, specialty shops, farmers’ market and more. Hospice, Community Action and P.A.W.S. will have information booths. Boy Scout Troop 164 is providing refreshments. Donate blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and receive a free meal. Enjoy live music and visit the “Cookie Buffet.” Secure playground and children’s activities. Beef on weck served from 11 a.m. until sold out. Hots and Italian sausage also available.

•St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 Main Street, Brockport, is opening its kitchen and parish hall to the community on the fourth Sunday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m. Luke’s Harvest Kitchen is offering three homemade soups, bread, hot chocolate, coffee and instant rice meals to take home. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted. Tables set up for eating, playing cards, coffee, and relaxing. •Free Community Movie Night on Friday, July 30 at Elmgrove United Methodist Church, 1500 Spencerport Road, Route 31, Gates. Oscar winning G-rated film begins promptly at 8:30 p.m.; spectators asked to arrive by 8:15 p.m. Bring seatings, snack and beverages. In case of rain movie will be shown indoors. •The Canal Days Ecumenical Worship Service will be held at Ogden Presbyterian Church, 2400 South Union Street, on July 25 at 10 a.m. with the Jazz Festival “The Touch of Brass.” Touch of Brass offers its musical numbers not as a performance, but as a way of celebrating, worshiping and praising God. Everyone invited.

•Cool Kids! Green Kids! hold programs on Fridays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Sagawa Park, corner of Main and Erie Street, Brockport (rain location is First Baptist Church, 125 Main Street, Brockport). July 30 program is Sal the Surly Cook with storytelling fun! Storyteller and professional actress Gretchen Sepik completely inhabits the colorful character of Sal - a surly Irish cook on an Erie Canal barge in the 1800s. She spins a web of comedic tales about upstate New York’s waterways, immigration, family and fun. Sponsored by Wegmans of Brockport. Free and open to the public. Bring blankets and/or chairs. •Brockport Rotary’s BBQ and Music Festival will be held July 31 and August 1 on The College at Brockport campus in conjunction with the 16th annual Brockport Summer Arts Festival. BBQ and Music Fest hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The proceeds will go to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. Besides the barbecue competitions, there will be BBQ food vendors, a Rotary hot dog food tent, children’s area, strolling magician Bill Gormont and Happy the Clown. WHAM’s Jim Salmon will be a Saturday KCBS competition judge. Parking will be at campus parking lots (enter via Commencement Drive off Route 31A) and on allowed vilage streets including downtown where a shuttle stop will be at Main and Erie. There is a $3 entrance donation for those 12 and above, or two for $5.

•The Italian American Community Center’s Revolving Arts Exhibit will feature artist Angela Racza’s photography and paintings in the Galleria delle Arti located on the second floor of the center, 150 Frank DiMino Way, off Manitou Road, Gates, during July and August. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
•Victorian Tea Party on Sunday, August 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Stone Church Presbyterian Church, Lake Road South, Bergen. Come with your favorite toy or bear, hat and tea cup. School age children welcome. Reserve early at the Library or the Town Hall. $2 donation for the Bergen Historical Society and Museums. •Emeritus at Landing of Brockport, an Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Brockport, invites the community to a free concert on the lawn featuring the Big Band sounds of the Gateswingers. The concert will be held on July 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Emeritus at Landing of Brockport, 90 West Avenue, Brockport. Bring a chair or blanket for seating. Free parking.

•The Town of Riga Recreation Department and the Cobblestone Community Players of Churchville production of Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years,” performances held on Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7 at 7 p.m. at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall, 22 West Buffalo Street, Churchville. Tickets are $10 and include dessert and the show. •Canal Days Pancake Breakfast, all-you-can-eat, July 24 and 25 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Spencerport Masonic Temple, 133 South Union Street, Spencerport. Cost is $4.50 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children, $4.50 for take-outs. Sponsored by Unity Lodge 479.

•Dick Pelcher Memorial Golf Tournament (all proceeds to benefit BHS golf scholarship) Saturday, July 31 at Hickory Ridge Country Club. Shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cost is $50 per person after July 24. •Luncheon at the IACC on July 28 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $13 per person. Reservations appreciated by calling 594-8882 at least two days in advance for four or more people so all can be accommodated. There will also be luncheons on August 11 and 25.

•Stan’s Harley-Davidson, Inc. 2010 Charity Ride, to benefit Crossroads House in memory of Dennis Bateman, South Byron Assistant Chief and Red Knight member, Sunday, August 1 from 10 a.m. to noon. Planning Board meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Zoning Board of Appeals meets the fourth Tuesday of the month (July 27) only upon application. Historic Preservation Board meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Village Hall as needed.

•Chili: Library Board of Trustees meets July 27 at 7 p.m. in the Barbara M. Ireland Community Room. Zoning Board of Appeals meets July 27 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Main Meeting Room. Architectural Advisory Committee meets July 28 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Main Meeting Room.

•Spencerport: Village Board meets the first Wednesday of every month; Planning and Architectural Review Board meets the first Tuesday of every month; and Zoning Board meets the third Thursday of every month. All meetings start at 7 p.m. at the Village Office, 27 West Avenue. The Board of Trustees also conducts meetings the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 4:30 p.m. at the Village Office.

•Lifetime Care Bereavement Support Group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Gates Presbyterian Church. No fee; no pre-registration required.

•A Caring Place - monthly bereavement programs for children, teens and their family - holds remembrance gatherings on August 23. For information, call Coordinator Lori Newland at 475-8825.

•The Alzheimer’s Association hosts its third annual Early Stage Conference, “Hope for Tomorrow, Tools for Today” on Tuesday, August 3, for persons with memory loss, their families, and professionals. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Pieters Family Life Center, 1025 Commons Way, Rochester. Advance registration required. Registration is free for persons with memory loss, $15 for families and care partners, and $50 for professionals. Historical

•The Ogden Historical Society Museum at the Pulver House, 568 Colby Street, Spencerport, is open for the season. Museum hours are 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoons.

•The Chili Historical Society will be conducting Open Houses at Streeters Inn each Sunday in July and August from 2 to 4 p.m. The Inn is located at 4541 Union Street. For information, contact Priscilla Beeman at 594-4015.

•Tours of the Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street, Brockport, will be given on Sundays in July and August at 1 and 2 p.m. The Italianate style home built in 1854 is now a museum and headquarters for the Western Monroe Historical Society. $5 donation welcomed. Call 585-637-5148.

Library Programs

•Programs at the Ogden Farmers’ Library, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport, 617-6181: Story Time at the Gazebo - every Tuesday (weather permitting) at 11 a.m. through August 17. For all ages. No registration required.

•Friends of the Chili Public Library are asking for donations of recent, good condition books, DVDs and CDs for their end of August book sale. No VHS tapes. Donations may be dropped off at the Information Desk any hours that the library is open.

•Deputy John Messura and his partner, Chip, will be giving a demonstration at the Newman Riga Library on Thursday, July 29 at 3 p.m. Deputy Messura and Chip are one of the K9 Patrol teams for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Sports & Recreation

•BU13-14 Soccer Churchville Storm Tryouts will be held on August 2 and 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Churchville Park. The Churchville Storm is holding tryouts for its 2010-2011 winter, spring and summer season. The Churchville Storm is newer to travel soccer and participates in many local indoor tournaments in the winter and large outdoor tournaments in the spring and summer as well as winter indoor practices that concentrate on team and individual development of soccer skills, tactics, and technique.
